Teen Career

READINESS

FOLLOW YOUR PASSIONS. ACCELERATE YOUR CAREER.

TGR Foundation’s teen career readiness strategy is designed to empower students from under-resourced communities to pursue their passions and prepare for their future.

OVERVIEW

Through a comprehensive set of programming including career-connected learning opportunities, post-secondary education (certification programs, trade programs, college and more) advisement and durable skills development, students gain a future full of unlimited possibilities. By learning about work, through work and at work, we create motivated who graduate from high school and pursue meaningful work in industries aligned with their interests.

LEARNING ABOUT WORK

Immersive career exploration offerings that expose students to viable future careers aligned with their interests through collaborative learning activities. Each offering focuses on an individual industry or an industry-specific business unit. Most are co-developed and co-facilitated by a local industry partner. The student experience includes:

  • Immersive Workshops
  • Collaborative Learning Activities
  • Panels with Working Professionals
  • Small-Group Networking Opportunities
  • Introductions to Certification, Apprenticeship and Skilled-Trade Programs

INDUSTRY ACADEMIES

Project-based programming that provides students with the opportunity to fulfill actual job responsibilities in a supportive environment. Students from partnering high schools collaborate in small groups to develop a solution to an actual challenge faced by a local employer from an industry relevant to their career interests, operating in pseudo-business units after school at the TGR Learning Lab. The student experiences include:

  • Small-Group Collaboration
  • Fulfilling Real-World Job Responsibilities
  • Presentation & Public-Speaking Coaching
  • A Culminating Showcase or Event
  • Feedback from Working Professionals

LEARNING AT WORK

Real-world work opportunities provided by local industry partners allow eligible 11th and 12th grade students to apply the skills and knowledge they accrued through the About and Through programs in the actual workplace. Participants of our Career Explorer Program are provided with a dedicated advisor to guide them throughout their work experiences and to help them prepare a post-secondary plan.

  • Workplace Visits
  • Job Shadowing
  • Summer & Micro-Internships
  • Pre-Apprenticeship
  • Temporary Paid Positions

FIND YOUR GRIND

Students at all TGR Learning Labs are empowered to pursue their passions by first participating in the Find Your Grind lifestyle assessment, which identifies the each persons individual interests and aligned career opportunities. Students, alongside TGR Foundation advisors, will then use the Future Ready learning solution to develop customized, actionable post-secondary plans that are aligned with their “lifestyle matches”, talents, aptitudes and aspirations.

PROGRAM OFFERINGS

Each pillar of the teen career readiness strategy is comprised of an ever-growing number of unique programs and offerings which are co-developed and executed with an industry partner including the dynamic Career Explorer and Industry Challenge.

CAREER EXPLORER

During this condensed, but immersive Learning About Work opportunity, students rotate through three experiential learning sessions that are co-developed and co-facilitated by industry professionals. The professionals also shared information about their individual career journeys and provided guidance to the students during an industry panel. The experience concluded with a collaborative final project that allowed the participants to apply their learnings from the day.
